Character

“Of all the properties which belong to honorable men, not one is so highly prized as that of character.” Sen. Henry Clay

Burke Basic School is highly committed to the character and moral development of children and adults. The Changing Lives program teaches 36 specific qualities that make up an individual’s character. The Changing Lives elementary program provides a 36-week plan, with 180 daily lessons, for each elementary grade.  Each student will have their own work book that is based on a Word of the Week that is introduced through a character story.  All of these character traits will help students and families to develop good character qualities.

“Fame is a vapor, popularity an accident, riches take wing, and only character endures.” Horace Greeley

Students participate in activities to discover how to best use their unique talents and strengths to foster improved social skills, self management and academic success!  Our Strengths program is a 21st century cutting edge approach that 467 of the Fortune 500 companies use to train their employees, resulting in outstanding results again and again.

“To educate a man in mind and not in morals is to create a menace to society.” Theodore Roosevelt

Burke Basic School places high priority on teaching character and moral values through its curriculum. For this reason we have combined the Changing Lives program with reading texts from the 1800s. The McGuffey’s and Harper’s readers are the mainstay of our reading program. These texts are filled with uplifting stories and poetry of character, hope, and patriotism. The books were also published during a time in American history when educational expectations were high and laced with moral values and patriotism.
